Why is Veritas Alliance calling me?

If you've received a call, voicemail, email, or letter from Veritas Alliance, it means they believe you have an outstanding account with a creditor they represent.

Sometimes the debt is legitimate. Sometimes it's an old account, a mistake, a debt you don't recognize, or a scam attempt using a real company name.

Always request written verification before confirming any debt or making a payment.

What to ask Veritas Alliance for before you pay

Request written documentation before confirming any personal details or making a payment.

You need the original creditor's name, the amount owed, the account reference number, and the date the debt relates to.

Getting this in writing lets you verify whether the debt is legitimate and creates a record of what you were told.

Will Veritas Alliance affect my credit score?

A collection account from Veritas Alliance will severely damage your credit score once it's reported to Equifax or TransUnion.

It stays on your credit report for 6 years from the date of your first missed payment. Paying it won't remove the mark from your credit file but updates the status to paid, which looks better to future lenders.

Check your own report to see whether Veritas Alliance has reported the account and whether the information is correct.

Scammers sometimes impersonate legitimate debt collectors. Always verify any debt in writing before making payments, and confirm contact details on Veritas Alliance's official website rather than relying on voicemail or text messages.

Your rights when Veritas Alliance contacts you

Debt collection rules vary by province, but consumer protection legislation across Canada prohibits debt collectors from harassing, threatening, or intimidating you.

They cannot make false or misleading statements, use profane or coercive language, or apply unreasonable pressure.

They cannot continue contacting you at work after you've told them not to. Every time a debt collector contacts you, they must identify themselves.

Red flags: how to spot a scam

Scammers sometimes impersonate debt collectors, including real companies like Veritas Alliance.

A scammer typically refuses to name the original creditor, threatens arrest, jail, or deportation, demands payment by e-transfer, gift card or cryptocurrency, and refuses to send anything in writing.

Verify the debt using contact details from Veritas Alliance's official website before paying.

What if the debt is old?

Every province has a time limit on how long a collection agency like Veritas Alliance can sue you for an unpaid debt.

Province / Territory Limitation period
Ontario, BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia 2 years
Quebec 3 years
Newfoundland and Labrador, PEI, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Yukon 6 years

Once the limitation period expires, Veritas Alliance can still sue you, but you can raise the expired limitation period as a complete defence. The defence isn't automatic. You have to file a defence in court and plead the expired limitation period. If you don't, the court will grant default judgment as if the limitation didn't apply.

Making a payment or acknowledging the debt in writing restarts the limitation period, but only if it hasn't already expired.

These limitation periods apply to most consumer debts like credit cards, lines of credit, and personal loans. Different rules may apply to government debts, court judgments, or secured debts like mortgages.

For more information, read our guide about debt statute of limitations.

How to stop calls from Veritas Alliance

Send Veritas Alliance a cease and desist letter. Once they receive it, they have to stop phoning. The debt doesn't go away, and they can still take legal action.

Use our cease and desist letter templates

Provincial law doesn't give you this right in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island or the Yukon.

However, if the debt's on a loan, line of credit, or credit card, send the letter by registered mail under federal law. If Veritas Alliance is physically based in Ontario, use Ontario's law instead.

How to file a complaint about Veritas Alliance

If you think that Veritas Alliance is breaking any debt collection rules, contact the consumer protection authority in your province.

Before filing, document the dates and times of contact, the phone number used, what was said, and copies of any emails, letters or texts.

For contact details and links to your provincial office, visit the Federal, Provincial and Territorial Consumer Affairs Offices directory.

FAQs

Request written verification showing the original creditor's name and the amount owed. Don't pay until you've confirmed it's legitimate.

Consumer reports show Veritas Alliance sometimes pursues very old debts. Check the limitation period for your province before taking any action.

Not without a court judgment first. To garnish wages or freeze accounts, a creditor needs to take you to court and win.

Veritas Alliance does offer litigation services and can pursue court action, but a phone call does not mean they have a judgment against you.

Collection agencies can contact third parties to locate you, but they cannot discuss your debt with anyone else. If you ask them to stop calling your workplace, they must stop.

Yes, if the debt is within the limitation period for your province.

The limitation period is 2 years in Ontario, BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia; 3 years in Québec; and 6 years in Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador, PEI, and the territories.

After the period expires, Veritas Alliance can still contact you, but cannot take you to court. Making a payment or acknowledging the debt in writing before the period expires restarts the clock.

Collection accounts stay on your credit report for 6 years from the date of last activity in most provinces, even after you pay the balance.

If a debt is sent to collections, it appears on your credit report and lowers your credit score.

Source: Government of Canada (FCAC) – How long information stays on your credit report

Yes. You can negotiate a settlement at any stage of the collections process.

Get the settlement terms in writing before you pay, and confirm that the remaining balance will be forgiven. Keep copies of all correspondence.
