At a glance KSI Law, whose legal name is KSI Law Professional Corporation, is a law firm that provides debt collection services for creditors. They have locations in Markham, Toronto and Calgary.

If KSI Law contacts you, ask for the debt in writing, by email or letter, and check whether it's a demand letter or a court claim. A court claim has a court file number, and you must respond within the deadline.

What is KSI Law?

KSI Law is a corporate and commercial law firm in Markham, Ontario, that collects debts for creditors like lenders and financial institutions.

KSI Law’s lawyers are licensed by the Law Society of Ontario. Y. Jay Baykara is their chief executive officer.

Why is KSI Law calling me?

KSI Law is calling you because a creditor has hired them to collect an account they believe you owe. It could be an old account or a balance you thought you'd paid. However, it could also be a debt that isn't yours at all.

Ask KSI for the original creditor, the amount owed and the account number in writing before you admit to the debt or give out any personal details.

If a number claiming to be KSI Law calls you, don't confirm your details or acknowledge that the debt is yours until they send it in writing (letter or email) and you've checked it against your own records. If you call back, use the main phone number, not the number that called you.

Some numbers are submitted by users. We call to verify each one and recheck periodically, but numbers can change.

Text messages from KSI Law

KSI Law also sends text messages from this short code. Canadian short codes are leased through the Canadian Telecommunications Association (formerly the CWTA) and approved by the mobile carriers, so a text from one is much harder to fake than a call or text from an ordinary number. Still check any debt against your written notice before you pay.

Who does KSI Law collect for?

KSI Law collects for creditors such as lenders and financial institutions, but doesn't publicly list clients. Your letter should name the creditor. If it doesn't, email or write to KSI Law and ask.

Consumer reports link KSI Law to four creditors, most often in telecom and banking.

Is KSI Law a debt collection agency?

No. KSI Law is a law firm that collects debts for creditors. Lawyers who collect debts don't need a collection agency licence in any province or territory, because their law society regulates them.

If you have a complaint about one of their lawyers, contact the Law Society of Ontario, or the law society in the province where that lawyer is licensed.

What to do if KSI Law calls you (step by step)

1

Ask for written verification. Get the original creditor's name, amount, account number and the date of last activity. Don't confirm anything until you've reviewed it in writing.

2

Don't share personal details. No address, date of birth or banking information until you've confirmed the debt is yours.

3

Check your credit report to see whether the debt has been reported. Get your free credit score and report with Borrowell.

4

Dispute the debt in writing if it's wrong. Keep copies of everything you send. If you've already been served with a court claim, this doesn't stop the deadline to file a Defence.

5

Check the statute of limitations in your province before paying. Making a payment or acknowledging the debt in writing can restart the clock if it hasn't already expired. If there's already a court judgment against you, different rules apply.

6

Settle if the debt is correct. The creditor may accept a lump sum for less than the full balance. Get any agreement in writing before you pay.

7

Pay by a traceable method like online banking, e-Transfer, or card, using only the payment details on your written notice or the firm's official website. Get a receipt.

8

Get help if you can't pay. Talk to a Licensed Insolvency Trustee or non-profit credit counsellor. A consumer proposal or bankruptcy filed through a trustee stops most lawsuits and wage garnishments by unsecured creditors.

Is a letter from KSI Law the same as being sued?

No. A demand letter is just asking you to pay. A lawsuit starts when a claim is filed with a court and served on you.

If you’re served with a claim, you have to file a response with the court:

  • Ontario Small Claims Court: file a Defence within 20 days.
  • Alberta Court of Justice: file a Dispute Note within 20 days, or 30 if you’re served outside Alberta.

If you miss the deadline, the creditor can get a judgment against you without a trial. A judgment is what lets them garnish your wages or bank account.

Can KSI Law take you to court or garnish your wages?

KSI Law can sue you on a creditor's behalf. A garnishment of wages or a bank account comes only after the creditor wins a court judgment. KSI Law also handles garnishments, seizures and repossessions after judgment.

Emailing or writing to KSI Law to ask them to stop calling doesn't stop a court claim.

Will KSI Law affect my credit score?

If the debt is reported to Equifax or TransUnion as a collection account, it will severely damage your credit score.

It stays on your credit report for 6 years from the date of your first missed payment, known as the date of first delinquency. Paying it won't remove the mark from your credit file but updates the status to paid, which looks better to future lenders.

If the creditor gets a court judgment against you, the judgment can also appear on your credit report.
